Academy Award Nominations

A few days ago the 79th Academy Award Nominations were announced (click HERE for the live announcement).academyAward.jpg

I have not seen 'Best Picture' nominees BABEL, LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA or THE QUEEN. I have, however, seen THE DEPARTED and LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE and they are both excellent, highly entertaining films.

Here is an Oscar parody by Dana Carvey (LINK).

The awards will be presented Sunday, February 25th.

Which film do you think will win 'Best Picture'?

Terence Travis:

Hello there,

I saw "Letters From Iwo Jima" and I have to say it is a magnificent film, a great companion piece to "Flags of Our Fathers" (from the Japanese perspective) but much superior to 'Flags.' The star of the film is Ken Watanabe ("The Last Samurai") and he really is excellent.

The Queen was great. The Oscar is Helen Mirren's to lose... however Meryl Streep also kicked ass in Devil Wears Prada

The Departed was awesome, and Mark Wahlberg stole every scene he was in. But I thought Matt Damon should've been nominated. Nicholson the legend too.

Little Miss Sunshine was laugh-out-loud hilarious, but Best Movie? I don't know about that

I thought SUNSHINE was great, saw it a few days ago on DVD and it's one of those movies that are sharp, moving and hilarious. It's nice seeing it nominated but it is too independent, too "Sundance" to win Best Picture - it's kinda this year's SIDEWAYS (another film I am a big fan of).

Tinkertoo:

Babel is certainly quite different from mainstream American movies, but personally I didn't think that it was good enough to be nominated for an award.
